Why Do Dogs Sigh?

Did you know that canines sigh just like we do? Humans sigh to express relief or negative emotions like stress or boredom. Your dog could be trying to convey a wide range of emotions with a sigh. In this article, you will unearth more about why dogs sigh, what it means, and how, if necessary, you can help your pup.

What is a Sigh?

Sighing is a long, deep exhale released from humans and animals. The National Library of Medicine states, “A sigh is a deep intensified breath with evident neurobiological, physiological properties that distinguish it from normal breath.” A sigh is an important function, as it expands and strengthens the lungs.

Why Dogs My Dog Sigh?

Dogs and humans both sigh. In humans, a sigh is an emotional response to relief, sadness, or exhaustion. Dogs sigh for several reasons, such as contentment, boredom, or just finished circling in their doggie bed and are about to lie down. The following include some reasons why dogs sigh:

They Are Happy

Dogs may sometimes sigh when they are feeling happy. This can occur when you are petting your dog, and they are relaxed and feeling the love, or after you have given them their favorite treat. Sighing is often the sound that your pup is “pleased as punch.” Some of the other indicators your canine is happy:

  • Relaxed ears
  • Wagging tail
  • Loose shoulders
  • Submissive grin

Of course, a dog who rolls onto their back and exposes their belly asks for a belly rub from their favorite human. It not only demonstrates that they are happy, but it also shows they trust you. If they roll onto their back and sigh, it is a sure sign of contentment.

They Are Relaxed

You know when your pup is relaxed when they are on the couch with you, and you are gently stroking their head, and they have their eyes half open, enjoying the attention. They are unwinding with you as they sigh. Another scenario is when they sigh after some rigorous play, possibly the most chilled out they can get. Nothing relaxes a dog like a day of fun in the sun.

They Are Frustrated

Your dog is more likely to sigh when happy but may also sigh when frustrated. If you are busy and they want to play or go for a walk, they may whine and give you that ever-so-loveable “puppy dog” face. However, if you aim to complete your task, your pup may sigh because they cannot get you to stop you from what you are doing, and they want your attention now!

They Are Disappointed

Similar to frustration, but there is a subtle difference. With frustration, they have not given up on their mission and are determined to get you to do what they want. With disappointment, they have accepted they cannot get what they want, but your pup wants you to know they are disappointed. Hence, they let out a defeated sigh. Some other signs your pup is feeling disheartened:

  • Lowered tail
  • Dull, sad eyes
  • Ears tucked down
  • Whining or whimpering

Dogs will often mope around if they are feeling disappointed. If your canine appears depressed, spend time with them to let them recognize you appreciate them being in your life. Take them to the dog park and toss the frisbee around. Their droopy ears will perk back up, and their tail will wag again.

They Are Bored

Sometimes dogs sigh when bored, and many humans do this as well. You may sigh when you perform a task you are not interested in, such as cleaning your home or writing a grocery list. Dogs are the same way. They may sigh when disinterested in something or alone with no one to play with. Dogs with separation anxiety are prone to boredom.

They Are Getting Ready to Sleep

Your dog may be getting ready to sleep, and they sigh, feeling relaxed and content. They have had a good day and are settling in, preparing to count the squirrels they are chasing in their head. Sometimes dogs sigh during sleep, indicating they are dreaming or attempting to get more comfortable.

They Need Attention

You may be engrossed in your work on the computer, and your dog suddenly comes into the room with one of their favorite toys, and they want you to play with them. They may look at you, drop the toy at your feet, and sigh because they want immediate attention. They may also do this if there is something else they want from you, like a treat. Some signs your pup wants attention:

  • Excessive barking
  • Howling or yelping
  • Whining or whimpering
  • Consistently jumping on you

In addition to regular playtime, your dog needs lots of affection to be a happy pup. Give your dog pets and cuddles every day. If your dog paws at you frequently, they try to get your attention and may seek comfort. You should never deny your sweet pooch affection when they need it, as it can hurt their feelings. After all, a dog must be reassured that the” leader of their pack” accepts and appreciates them.

They Are Experiencing Discomfort

If your dog suffers from arthritis or pain, they may sigh to express their discomfort. They may sigh when they move into a particular position or are resting in an area with pain. Arthritis can be debilitating for your dog, and it is essential to help them as much as possible. Some of the other indicators of arthritis in dogs:

  • Difficulty standing up or lying down
  • Loss of muscle mass in the limbs
  • Reluctance to run, jump, or walk upstairs
  • Hesitation to be touched on some parts of the body

You can help your dog with arthritis by keeping them active for 30 to 60 minutes daily, avoiding high-impact activities like running. Walking is the best exercise for pups in pain. The solution is to discover the perfect balance. You can talk to your vet about physical therapy for your dog.

They Are Anxious

Dogs with separation anxiety often feel uneasy and upset until they see their guardian walk through the door. They may sigh when they know you are about to leave for the day. If you know your pup has separation anxiety, you must exercise them before you leave the house so they become tired and ready to rest and sleep while you are away. There is honesty in the saying, “A tired dog is a happy dog.” Please set up a crate for them to feel safe in and make it fun and relaxing.

There Are Many Reasons Why Dogs Sigh

When your pup sighs, they attempt to communicate a message. Whether your pup is saying, “Ah, that feels good, keep petting me,” or “Ah, I finally get to be in my bed,” it is essential to understand what your canine companion is saying so you can help them if necessary and deepen your bond.
