The Wonderful, Mysterious Cat

Dr. Amy Mathews of TVV Buckhead speaks about our feline friends . . .

Cats are extremely popular pets for many good reasons. One of these reasons that may work against them, and us, is the thought that they are low maintenance and do not need or want much attention. Stresses which we unintentionally cause our cats by not providing them a comfortable environment contribute to behavior problems and illnesses in our feline friends. There are more and more resources available to help us see the world through the eyes of cats and to render them a little less mysterious to us mere humans. One if these sources is indoorpet.osu.edu/cats.

One very basic and very important principle that we can all agree on is that everyone wants a clean bathroom. It is also very nice to have some privacy and feel safe in the restroom. We also can all agree that cleaning the litterbox is not glamorous but since they cannot do it themselves, it is up to us to get the job done. Sleeping is a favorite hobby of cats so we need to think about a comfortable, soft, clean bed or beds. They tend to like to go into their kitty comas in elevated areas where they can really hide. You know how good they are at hiding – especially when you are trying to make it to your vet appointment.  We also need to remember they are a hunting species so provide toys and playtime so  they can run and pounce as they would with small prey. We prefer that this small prey not be our toes under the covers in the wee hours.  Sturdy scratching posts and climbing areas are most appreciated by many felines. They usually like rough surfaces that they can tear into. You can put catnip and treats around these areas to communicate that this a stress free zone to let loose and not on the favorite couch.

Remember when you read various tips and ideas about cats and their likes and dislikes that they are very much individuals and have their own preferences. Try to sit back and watch and listen to what your cat(s) want. Cats and dogs can both be our best friends and despite all reports to the contrary – you can all be part of one big happy pack
