The Use of Endoscopy

TVV Decatur began implementing the use of endoscopy last year as a non-invasive alternative to some surgical procedures. Endoscopy involves the visualization of internal organs in a noninvasive manner. It is performed using a fiber optic camera on a tube. Although the procedure requires general anesthesia, it does so without invasive surgical incisions, resulting in less pain and quicker recovery time.

An endoscope consists of a rigid or flexible tube with a mounted fiber optic camera, light source and two channels. One of these channels allows for air and water to pass into the organ. Water cleans the lens of the camera and air inflates the organ for better visualization. The second channel allows for suctioning of contents and also for passing instruments. The image from the camera projects onto a screen. Using two dials, we can change the direction of the tip of the camera.

In veterinary medicine, endoscopy is used for both diagnostic and treatment procedures. Depending on the type (flexible versus rigid) and length of the scope, we can visualize many organs including the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory and urinary tract, as well as joints. We can then look for evidence of inflammation, tumors or polyps. An instrument can be passed through the channel and biopsies can be obtained.
Endoscopes can also be used in the treatment of some diseases. Foreign objects or small masses present in the stomach and parts of the small intestines can often be removed. Endoscopy eliminates the risks associated with incisions into the organ and body wall. As a result, patients spend far less time hospitalized with a much lower risk of complications.

TVV Decatur has been excited to implement the use of endoscopy. At this time, we are limited to gastrointestinal procedures but will be expanding our use of it in the future.
